The ABC's of financial exploration

Continuing from the first post, the next step in my journey of financial exploration to learn the ABC's of personal finance and investing, I started looking for dependable sources of financial information for beginners. The two best sources I thought were Investopedia's building blocks tutorial and the US Securities & Exchange Commission's roadmap for beginners. Investopedia articles are unique in that all jargon is linked to textbook definitions as well as an "Investopedia says..." explanation which provides some practical tidbits. I'd recommend reading these two guides in their entirety to get a good, basic understanding of concepts and jargon.

So much I didn't know about finance

In my quest to teach myself about personal finance, investments, and all that jazz (you know, stuff that you think you're just going to magically know when the time comes), I realized this would be a good place to chronicle my experience as I go along since I've spent much of Christmas break reading and researching. Hopefully, the time I've spent in looking for credible sources of financial knowledge will be helpful to someone else in my situation.

To start with, I read a book called The Millionaire Next Door. It starts out by breaking down the meaning of wealth beyond one's income and bank accounts. The ten dollars and twenty cents you spend on this book are going to be a lot more rewarding than that 1000-calorie Chipotle burrito. It's an excellent read for anyone who considers him/herself financially responsible. Here is a worthwhile summary of what the book has to offer. What I got most out of it is a convincing explanation of why it doesn't make sense to buy things just because you think you can afford them.

By this time, I've figured out there are things that I'm not going to learn in pharmacy school. Some things, for example, basket weaving, I can live without. Others are indispensable to survival in a materialistic, capitalist economy. Somewhere in between teaching myself about stocks and mutual funds, I realized from this worksheet that I'm not going to be able to kick back as soon as I'd like.

White IS the new silver

This is what happens when you put a can of white spray paint, masking tape, and scissors in the hands of a Mac addict. So I decided to spray paint a Western Digital hard drive to make it more apt for a Mac backup drive. I figured it'd be a lot faster than waiting for a manufacturer. I'm more than satisfied with the result.

Clean Design: Mortar and pestle like no other

Today's clean design post actually relates to something I do. Every (future) pharmacist tends to have an attraction toward owning at least one set of mortar and pestle. I have yet to walk into a pharmacy professional's office and not find one proudly displayed.

Scrybe is a new Web 2.0 application that happens to kick ass. Bill Scott has a detailed breakdown on its use. From what I've tried so far, it looks promising. There's a video on the website that demonstrates it. The guy in the video has an Indian accent which is always a treat. Speaking of Indian accents, you don't want to miss this.

Radio like it should be

Today I finally found the perfect radio station: my radio station, music like I want to hear it. Pandora is a flash powered radio website that plays songs according to what you say you like. All you have to do is name an artist or song and it plays music similar to your tastes. As you play more songs and indicate whether you like them or not with a thumbs up or down, it learns what you like.

My only gripe is that it won't play the next song if you're working on another browser tab/window. This is at least the case with Safari.

Clean Design: Titanium cufflinks

Every once in a while I run into things products that are designed to my aesthetic perfection. These cufflinks are one such example. Beautiful, yet functional.

What's with this name?

For those of you whose lives don't revolve around health professions, "tk one qd" is actually short for "take one everyday" and in practice, it would be "Take 1 tablet by mouth everyday." These notations are called "sig codes" and are used by physicians to quickly scribble illegible directions for pharmacists to interpret.
